Collection: Bio

David Bratton is a painter and sculptor whose projects explore the fusion of, and boundaries between leisure and fantasy. Having grown up in a conservative Christian household, he has been preoccupied with questions of suppression and deviance for most of his life. What is considered deviant: a shape and color pairing, a fetish, a deformity? Drawing inspiration from outsider architecture, industrial design, sex toys, and vintage science fiction, his work plays with systems of understanding in order to imagine more vibrant and inclusive realms.

David has lived and worked in Los Angeles since 2015. After graduating from the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia with a BFA in Sculpture, he moved to New York in 2005 and was a Teaching Artist for the Joan Mitchell Foundation for nine years. David has been awarded artist residencies at the Cooper Union, Vermont Studio Center, Millay Colony for the Arts and the Santa Fe Art Institute. His work has been shown in New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Texas, and Los Angeles.
